Baroque Cheb

 
 

The starting point of the Cheb Baroque tour is the building of the New Town Hall in Krále Jiřího z Poděbrad Square.

  • Length: 1420 m
  • Duration: 1-2 hours
  1. The building of the New Town Hall No. 10 (Alliprandi) – today the Gallery of Fine Arts.
  2. We continue past the Rolland Fountain, to Jateční Street, the house No. 449 here.
  3. We continue further through Dlouhá and Františkánská Streets to Františkánské Square – we can see the former monastery of the Poor Clares' with the St. Clare Church (Dienzenhofer), today changed into Klára exhibition and concert hall.
  4. We continue further through Františkánské Square and the passage to Divadelní Square, then along Obrněné brigády Street on the right, to Hradební Street, where the town yard and barns are located. 
  5. We continue through Hradební Street to Dlouhá Street, where we turn left to Provaznická Street with Baroque houses and portals. Then we continue through Provaznická Street to the square, and we notice the gallery of the house No. 477 on the way.
  6. We can take a closer look at the Grüner’s House (No. 478) in the square, which was reconstructed in the seventies of the 20th century.
  7. We continue through Kamenná Street, where the St. Wenceslas Church and the former Dominican Monastery (today a cultural centre) are located.
  8. We turn right and climb the Church Stairs leading to Kostelní Square, where  a cantor’s Baroque house is situated. Then, through Kostelní Street, we walk back to Jiřího z Poděbrad Square; where on the left side we can see Gablerovský House (No. 507) with a rich rococo facade.
  9. We will take a look at Baroque statues on the fountains in the square - Hercules (also the wild man).
  10. An analogue of the sculpture on the gallery stairwell is at the lower fountain; Roland at the upper fountain is a modern copy of the original sculpture, whose weathered original is in the stone collection of the museum.
  11. We will return to the New Town Hall, and if we did not see the interior at the beginning of our tour, we should not omit the visit and thus finish the Cheb Baroque monuments tour.
