Municipal Theatre

The theatre was built by Karl Haberzettl in Neo-Renaissance style between the years 1873 and 1874 according to the design of local architect Vinzenz Prökl. The area of the former town fortification in the western part of the town – on the so-called “Panenská šance” – was transformed into the stately Divadelní (Theatre) Square. The original structure was a rigid cubic block, which protruded outwards in two cascades as a deep risalit. The portico with columns and the gable with austere pilasters paid homage to worshipful Greek temples. The strict alignment of the rounded windows evokes the tranquillity of Classicism, which seems to be disturbed only by the combination of free-standing columns with tall rectangular bases. Judging from the high position of the column bases, the theatre was probably constructed according to the theatre in Munich, Germany, which was built in Gärtnerplatz between the years 1864 and 1865 by Franz Michael Reifenstuel. The column bases compensate the height proportion with respect to the staircase. The theatre interiors are the work of court decoration master Lehnert from Darmstadt and of painter Karl Johann Bröms from Františkovy Lázně. Most of the furnishings were imported. The original, purely cubic structure was subsequently complemented with two side wings.

(Catalogue 1994, 84-5)

The building serves thespians to this day. The West Bohemian Theatre may boast an abundant repertoire. The weekly program features several performances of different genres.
