The “Chebská eskomptní společnost” building
Year of construction: 1900
Number of views: 4936
The small house with semi-framed barn of the Kraus family used to stand in the place of the “Chebská eskomptní společnost” (Cheb Discount Company). The last owner, Martin Kraus, sold the plot including the buildings to the Cheb Discount Company, unlimited liability company, in June 1899. It built its banking and residential building here in the coming years. The three-floor building is one of the late evidences of fairly good quality Neo-Renaissance architecture in the town. Its representative character is further underlined especially by a slightly receding quoin crowned by a monumental dome besides the massive pitch-faced ground floor. The third floor was designed in a rather loose manner in an attempt to lighten the building since there was a lack of order of architecture. In 1922 the Cheb company became part of the “Central bank of German savings institutions in Czechoslovakia” and in 1937 of the monetary institution “Kreditanstalt der Deutschen”. After World War II the building was transferred into the ownership of the “Okresní spořitelna a záložna” (Regional savings and credit bank) in Cheb, and later the “Státní spořitelna” (State savings bank) in Cheb. The “Česká spořitelna a. s.” (Czech Savings Company) resides in the building now.
