Fortification

The basic assumption for the defence of the Cheb castle was the position of the castle itself since it was located on a spur with a ditch dug out at the place of the entry. In terms of the fortification of the Vohburg castle itself we are certain only of the wall with two cylindrical towers going north-south at the end of this fortification. Remains of its foundations have been discovered at the digs.

Also the later palatinate was protected by the shape of the terrain at the northern, western and eastern side. Later on, the castle was incorporated into the town walls which were even triple in some parts. Two towers were additionally built on the northern part, only one has been preserved. The more western Rocky Tower was taken down in 1827, the material was used for the construction of the shooting gallery under the castle.

As Cheb was being changed into a fortress in the half of the 17th century, the castle was clamped by brick walls. Due to the fact that the castle was to serve as a citadel in the event of an enemy seizing the town reinforced fortification, casemates were added to the side towards the town and the ditch was more deepened and extended.
